Throughout their century-old history the glorious people of iran have created wonderful monuments of material and spiritual culture, making a tremendous contribution to the progress of world civilization. A special place in the history and culture of Iran belongs to the period of the Achaemenid Empire, when foundations of Iranian statehood were laid. That period was also an important phase in the historical and ciltural development of many other countries and nations comprised in the Empire.
The culture of the Achaemenid Iran, lemarkable lor its great originality, imbibed numerous achievements of various peoples who actively participated in the economic and cultural life of the Achaemenid State. A very prominent role was played by the peoples and tribes of Transcaucasia and Central Asia, as-well as of the «steppe regions» to the north of the latter. These extensive and strong links were based on close contacts between peoples in the pre-Achae-menid period and on a multitude of common features of their ethno-cultural heritage. Peoples and tribes of Central Asia and Transcaucasia and other peoples of the East greatly contributed to the development of Iran's culture in the Ahaemenid period. At the same time, the existence of the Achaemenid Empire played an important role in the historical and cultural development of the Tran-scaucasian and Central-Asian countries as well as of some other areas of the USSR. Therefore we may regard the Achaemenid period as an important stage in the history of the peoples of our country.
