Next day we got a message. «Have seen the face again at the window,» it said, «1'Il meet theseven o'clock train, and take no step until you arrive.»
Mr.Grant Munro was waiting on the platform when we stepped out and we could see in the light of station lamps that he was very pale. It was a very dark night and a thin rain began to fall as we turned from the main road into a lane. We reached the cottage and suddenly a woman appeared before us.
«Don't go inside, Jack!» she cried, «Trust me, and I will have explained things to you!»
«I have trusted you too long, Effie,» said Mr. Grant Munro and opened the door of the cottage.
We went upstairs and saw a cosy room with nice furniture in it. In the comer there sat a little girl in a red dress and long white gloves. As she turned her face to us and smiled we saw that there was a little coat-black Negress. We started laughing, but Mr.Grand Munro was very serious.
«My God!» he cried to Ws wife. «What does it all mean?»
«I told you I was going to explain it to you later. My husband died in Atlanta, but my child didn't.» «Your child!»
«Yes, Jack,» she said and showed him the photo of her first husband who appeared to be a Negro. «It happened so that little Lucy is even darker than her father was. But, black or white, she is my own little daughter, and I love her so much. When I left her in America, it was only because her health was weak. But when I met you and learnt to love you, JaCk11 was afraid to tell you about my child.»
It was a long two minutes before Grant Munro took the girl by the hand and said:
«WeH, we'll discuss this matter at home. Maybe, I am not a very good man, Effie, but I think I am a better one than you nave thought.»
Holmes and I followed them down to the lane.
«I think, dear Watson,» said Holmes, «that we'll be of more use in London than in Norbury.»
