Мы можем также использовать этот метод для оценки наличия однодоменного магнетита в качестве первичной компоненты в различных типах горных пород. Это является чрезвычайно важным для палеомагнитных исследований глинистых сланцев и других осадочных пород. Поскольку главные минеральные фазы в глинистых сланцах представлены диагенетическими глинистыми минералами, остаточная намагниченность сланцев может оказаться вторичной. Очевидно, это не относится к Потамидским глинам. Весьма вероятно, что и другие глинистые сланцы первичную остаточную намагниченность приобрели также в процессе биологического осаждения оксида железа. Глинистые сланцы составляют более половины всех осадочных пород и понимание процессов, в результате которых они приобретают остаточную намагниченность, представляется важным с точки зрения изучения палеомагнетизма.
