In the twenties of the XX century the USA turned into the greatest imperialist country in the world. Technology grew, and automobiles, radios andmovies became highly popular. Plenty of money was available for investment. Much of it, however, went into speculation in the stock market. On October 24, 1929, Black Thursday, the stock market crashed. Banks closed. The nation stayed in this depression through most ofthe thirties. When in 1933 Roosevelt was elected President, he proposed a New Deal economic reform which was a success, and helped the American economy to recover.
