Английский язык в США (American English) имеет свои особенности, что закономерно, поскольку британский английский язык (British English) сложился на основе южно-английского диалекта (центром которого в XVII веке стал Лондон), в то время, как общеамериканский английский язык сформировался значительно позже из слияния трех американо-английских диалектов: восточного, южного и западного. Различия между британским и общеамериканским английским проявляются в некоторых фонетических нормах, грамматических правилах и употреблении лексических единиц.
a) Американский английский язык имеет следующие фонетические особенности:
1. Краткий монофтонг [о] произносится как [л]: dog[cL\g], stop [sup], fox[f\ks], bodylWh], hot[b\t], doctor [оШэ], college ['Miefe], comedy ['клтеаі], etc.
2. Долгий монофтонг [ ju:] после согласных d, t, n, s, z произносится как долгое [u:]: due [du:}, duty [dun], tube [tub], new[nu:], knew['nu:], suit[su:t], student [student], etc.
