So we all felt that it would be nicer for Mother to have a purpose in front; and anyway, it turned out that father had just got a new fishing rod the day before, and he said that Mother could use it if she wanted to. In fact, he said it was practically for her. But Mother said that she would be glad to watch him fish and not to fish herself.
So we arranged everything for the trip, and Mother made some sandwiches and prepared a sort of lunch in case we got hungry, though of course we had to come back home again to a big dinner in the middle of the day, just like Christmas or New Year's Day or Easter. Mother packed it all up in the basket for us ready to go in the motor.
Well, when the car came to the door, it turned out that there was not enough place for everybody as we had supposed, because we hadn't thought of Father's fishing basket and the rods and the lunch. These things took a tot Of place, and we couldn't all get in.
Father said that he could just as well stay at home, and that he was sure that he could remain and spend the time working in the garden. He said that there was a lot of dirty work that he could do; so he said that he would with pleasure stay at home. He said that it wasn't at all important that he hadn't had a real holiday for three years; he wanted us to go without him and not to think about him, just to be happy and have a big day; and in fact, he said he had been a fool to think there would be any holiday for him.
But of course, we all felt that we would never let Father stay at home, especially as we knew it for sure that he would do anything wrong in the garden. The two girls Anne and Mary said that they had new hats, and it seemed such a pity to them on such a lovely day like this to stay at home and help the maid to cook dinner. But they both said that Mother had only to say the word, and they would gladly stay at home and work. My brother Will end I said that it was no problem for us to stay at home, but unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to help the maid to cook dinner.
So finally it was decided that Mother would stay at home and just have a rest round the house, and prepare the dinner. It turned out that to fish wasn't anyway Mother's hobby, and also it was rather cold and fresh outdoors, though it was lovely and sunny, and Father was afraid that Mother would catch cold if she came.

He said he would never forgive himself if he took Mother to the country and let her catch cord at a time when she might have a good rest at home. He said that youhg people seldom realize how much a good rest means for people who are getting old. So we all kissed Mother and drove away, and Mother stood and watched us leaving for as long as she could see us, and Father waved his hand back to her every few minutes until he said that Mother could see us any longer.
Well, we had the most pleasant day up among the hills, and Father caught quite a lot offish. Will and I fished too, though we didn't get so many as Father, and the two girls met quite a lot of people that they knew as we drove along, and mere were some young men friends of theirs that they met at trie river and talked to, and so we all had a good time.
It was quite late when we got back, nearly seven o'clock in the evening, but Mother had guessed that we would be late, so she had kept back the dinner so as to have it just nicely ready and hot for us. Only first she had to get towels and soap for Father and dean shoes and other things for him to put on, because he always gets so dirty with fishing, and that kept Mother busy for some time, that and to help the girls get ready.
But at last everything was ready, and we sat down to the greatest kind of dinner - a turkey and all sorts of tasty mings like at Christmas. It was a real party. And we were glad we could take part in it. Mother had to get up and down a lot of times during the meal bringing things back and forward, but at the end Father noticed it and said that K wasn't right that she did it on ^Mother's Day», and he got up and brought a dish with cakes himself.
The dinner lasted long, and it was a success, and when it was over, all of us wanted to help Mother to wash the dishes, but Mother said that she would like to do it alone, and so we let her do it, because we wanted just to please her.
It was quite late when it was ail over, and when we all kissed Mother before we went to bed, she said it had been the most wonderful day in her life, and I think there were tears in her eyes. So we all felt awfully proud of all that we had done.
