1. ЧТО МЫ ЗНАЕМ (ИЛИ ДУМАЕМ, ЧТО ЗНАЕМ)
О ПРОИСХОЖДЕНИИ ЖИЗНИ
Пора, наконец, подвести итог всему сказанному в этой книге, разобраться в результатах исследования возможности естественного возникновения жизни. В этой итоговой главе мы проведем различие между несомненными фактами и теми процессами и событиями, которые, по нашим представлениям, вполне могли иметь место. В нашем исследовании мы руководствовались принципом униформизма, который, как мы видели в гл. II, позволяет восстанавливать геологическую историю, сопоставляя данные о древних горных породах с тем, что известно об идущих в наше время геологических процессах.
