За несколько дней или недель из одной оплодотворенной яйцеклетки
развивается сложный многоклеточный организм, состоящий из
дифференцированных клеток, взаимное расположение которых строго
детерминировано. Как правило, эта организация создается сначала в малом
масштабе, а потом происходит рост. Во время эмбрионального развития
детерминируются различные типы клеток, каждый в соответствующем месте.
Затем, в период роста, клетки размножаются, но, за некоторыми
исключениями, их специализация остается более или менее постоянной.
Организм может расти в течение всей жизни, как у большинства ракообразных
и рыб, а может прекращать рост, достигнув определенных размеров, как у
птиц и млекопитающих. У некоторых животных с фиксированными размерами
тела, например у мух и нематод, пролиферация 1 соматических клеток
прекращается, как только будет достигнуто взрослое состояние. Во многих
других случаях, в том числе и у высших! позвоночных, клетки продолжают
делиться и во взрослом организме для замещения отмирающих клеток.
Когда у позвоночных клетки таких тканей, как кожа, кровь или легкие,
изнашиваются и гибнут, их место занимают новые клети соответствующего
типа. Таким образом, взрослый организм можно уподобить стабильной
